THE NATURAL PARK OF SASSO SIMONE AND SIMONCELLO

These parks are situated in the heart of Montefeltro, an area where Carpegna, Fontino, Montecopiolo, Pian di Meleto, Pennabilli e Pietrarubbia are. 9,000 people live in this communes. The most important morphologic element in this area is the contrast between limestone and the clay outcrops which form a beautiful landscape.

Walking through the paths you can see a rich vegetation: woods of beeches, maples and ashes. Monte Carpegna(1400m) and Sasso Simone(1200m) change their colour from green to red according to the season and give the landscape an amazing aspect!

The heart of the park hides an historical town: Città del Sasso. It was built by Cosimo I of Medici in 1560 and it is Renaissance style. There were 50 houses and an old church. In the past a lot of streets linked the town to neighbouring castles and Florence. In 1627 Città of Sasso was abandoned because of the climate. Nowadays in this area only animals typical of Apennines, such as the wolf, live . The visit of this park can satisfy everyone who likes nature and delicious food. In summer you can visit this area with local guides or you can attend special lessons with experts to learn more about nature.
